Welsh anglers to have a new voice
as Angling Trust extends its role

The Angling Trust is to extend its role representing its growing membership of individual anglers, angling clubs, fisheries, riparian owners and tackle shop owners in Wales – something which was until now restricted to England.

The role will initially be limited to a short list of issues linked to ongoing campaigns that the Angling Trust is already running: salmon netting, agricultural pollution, unlawful canoe access, tidal lagoons, commercial over-exploitation of sea bass, cormorant and goosander predation, abstraction licensing and barriers to migration.

However, if there is substantial growth in membership, the Trust will consider taking on a full representative role.

Fisheries and clubs: Please ask to see a rod licence

The Angling Trust is appealing to clubs and commercial fisheries to help ensure anglers contribute to protecting fisheries by making it a requirement of fishing on your waters that members and day ticket customers have a valid rod licence to fish.

If every club and fishery joined in, we could stamp out rod licence evasion and generate millions more to spend on fisheries within the Environment Agency. If you need advice about how to do this, please download a factsheet which contains the correct wording for your rules.

Testwood licence applied for as a ‘minor change’

Southern Water has submitted the long-anticipated application to vary its water abstraction licence at Testwood on the lower River Test near Southampton. In combination with a proposed £50 million pipeline to transfer water to its Otterbourne works on the River Itchen (supposedly to compensate for reductions there being required under the Habitats Directive), Fish Legal believes the proposals pose unacceptable risks to the Test’s salmon and sea trout runs.

Fish Legal is considering a challenge to the application, which has been made under a ‘minor changes’ relicensing procedure not requiring public consultation.
