Thames Water fined £1 million for canal pollution

Thames Water has been fined a record-breaking £1 million for polluting the Grand Union Canal in Hertfordshire between July 2012 and April 2013 with sewage due to poorly performing screens. We have seen a number of much larger fines for polluters in recent months in response to new sentencing guidelines which have been introduced after a consultation to which the Angling Trust & Fish Legal responded.

Dredging ditches could lead to more flooding

The Angling Trust believes Defra’s proposals to allow farmers to dredge ‘ditches’ without seeking permission from the Environment Agency could increase the risk of flooding in towns and cities and cause widespread damage to the environment. We are calling on the Secretary of State to reconsider and look at how rivers can be better protected from unsustainable farming that is causing widespread soil erosion.

Our man John Cheyne crowned drop shot champion

Congratulations to the Angling Trust’s John Cheyne and his neighbour Steve Wilson who were crowned 2015 Angling Times Fox Rage National Drop Shot Champions, held on the Grand Union Canal in Warwickshire.

The lure fishing fanatics tempted 22 fish for a combined length of 301cms, including a 41cms pike and a 23cms perch.

John is the Angling Trust’s National Regions Manager.

Changes in the law mean that angling club bailiffs can no longer be checked for criminal records through the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Water companies fail to co-operate on sewage outfalls

Nearly 2,000 sewage outfalls are still not being properly regulated by the Environment Agency because water companies are failing to tell the regulator what exactly is coming out of the pipes, a freedom of information request by the Angling Trust and Fish Legal has uncovered.

Sea anglers: Support initiative to improve the Clyde

There’s still time for recreational sea anglers to support an initiative which could help reverse the declines in inshore fish populations on the Firth of Clyde. The Scottish Government is seeking comments by next Monday on a proposal which could dramatically improve inshore fishing.
