EU ruling ‘will not halt the decline in bass stocks’

Organisations representing Britain’s 800,000 sea anglers have reacted furiously to the news that EU Fisheries Ministers, including the UK’s George Eustice, have caved in to pressure from commercial fishing interests and granted exemptions to the highly damaging bass gill net fishery.

The Angling Trust has recruited two more Eastern Europeans to further encourage legal fishing in England. They have joined the Trust’s Building Bridges project aimed at educating migrant anglers on our conservation-based angling culture and ‘catch and release’ practice.

John’s our ‘Introduce A Friend’ tackle winner

Congratulations to Angling Trust member John Bennett, winner of our ‘Introduce A Friend’ competition. John, from Mexborough in South Yorkshire, receives £200 of Daiwa tackle of his choioce after entering the competition to introduce a newcomer to the Trust.

John, who celebrates his 70th birthday in January, still goes match and pleasure fishing in summer – and lists a 20lb common carp among his prize catches.

New list published for British record sea fish

The British Record (rod caught) Fish Committee has updated its Sea Fish and Notable Fish listings following ratification of claims for new records.

Among the new captures is 16-year-old Ollie Stenning’s 8lb 7oz 4dr thin-lipped mullet caught off the coast of Guernsey.
