Fish Legal Call On SEPA to Protect Clyde Salmon

Pictured Left: Small sample of the total amount of fish killed in 2013 that have been dumped in a skip

Fish Legal has sent a legal notification under the Environmental Liability Directive to Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) asking that they take immediate action against Scottish Water, to stop a repeat of the devastating 2013 sewage pollution incident on the lower Clyde that killed up to 20% of the entire Clyde salmon run.

Fish Legal has discovered that a major factor in 2013 fish kill was poor operating practice at Scottish Water’s (SW) Dalmarnock sewage treatment works, one of Glasgow’s largest. In particular the poor state of Dalmarnock’s storm tank facilities has resulted in frequent emissions of raw sewage into the Clyde.

SW’s Dalmarnock licence requires it to have event monitors that record the duration and frequency of sewage spills into the Clyde. Unfortunately SEPA has chosen not to enforce this condition, and so we suspect that Dalmarnock sewage treatment works is pumping raw sewage into the Clyde much more frequently than the regulator realises.

Fish Legal solicitor Robert Younger is pressing for action.

Fish Legal & Angling Trust Respond to Water Framework Directive Consultation

Fish Legal, the Angling Trust and WWF, have jointly submitted a response to the Environment Agency’s consultation on the second cycle of draft River Basin Management Plans.

The consultation was an opportunity for the organisations to assess the Government’s performance and whether it had achieved its commitments in the ‘Statement of Position’ – agreed commitments which resulted from legal action taken by Fish Legal, Angling Trust and WWF against the Environment Agency in 2010 – regarding the then new plans.
